Robert William Ditchburn (1903-1987) was Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy, Dublin University 1929-1946; Professor of Physics, Reading University 1946-1968. He oversaw a considerable expansion of physics at Reading which culminated in the opening of the J. J. Thomson Physics Laboratory in 1960.
